As summer winds down, families begin preparing to send their children back to school. Between clothing, lunches, and supplies, quite a dent can be put in the pocket. School supplies are necessary, no matter what age the child. There are easy ways to save money on the most common supplies used in school.
Step 1: Take a home inventory. See what supplies remain from last year and what is lying around at home. Rulers, containers, backpacks, and calculators do not need annual replacement if they are in good condition. If there are extra pens and pencils in the home office, allocate them to the school supply.
Step 2: Compare back to school sales. Stores slash their prices on school supplies mid-summer in an effort to compete for customers. Step 5: Stick with the basics. Non-customized, plain products are always cheaper so a plain folder will cost less than one with a cartoon character. Purchase the plain one and let the child personalize it with drawings or stickers.
Step 6: Do not forget to look online. There are Internet deals to be found for basic school supplies as well as hot new items. Some Web sites offer free shipping when the order reaches a certain dollar value.
Step 7: Shop during sales tax free dates. Some states offer sales tax free shopping days prior to the beginning of the school year. Check online for the dates in your state.
Step 8: Purchase extra items for holiday time. With prices this low, scoop up some extras for stocking stuffers and Hanukkah gifts. You will save money now and save time during the pre-holiday rush.
