When a rug has been down for only a few months, indentations are commonly seen where furniture has sat. Even if you move your furniture around often, there are still indentations left by the weight of the furniture on the nap of the rug. Here are a few tips on how to repair those rug indentations, that can be used on any type of carpet, any length nap and any aged rug in a home.
You will need:
- Carpet cleaner such as rug doctor variation
- Scrub brush
- Hot water source
- Broom
- Squirt bottle filled with hot water
- Toothbrush
Step 1: Use the toothbrush to raise the mat on the carpet. This is done by placing the toothbrush at the nap and then brushing the indentation back up so the nap sits up properly. Do this in all the indentations in the rug prior to moving on. If you have large areas that require brushing, you can use a large broom to pull the nap back into its proper position by placing it at the edge of the indentation. Pull the nap against its current position to pull it back into place.
Step 2: Fill the carpet cleaner with the appropriate amount of hot water, but no cleansers. You are not trying to clean the rug, but simply pull the nap back up to its proper placement. Run the carpet cleaner according to directions, over all areas where the indentations occurred.
Step 3: Allow the rug to partially dry, and then go over the indentations again with the brush, toothbrush or broom to bring the nap back to proper placement. Allow the rug to dry completely, and then check the indentations again. Repeat these steps as required until the indentations are completely gone. If this does not work for you, continue to step 4.
Step 4: Work the indentations with a toothbrush only and a squirt bottle filled with hot water. The hot water will help the nap to stand upright when sprayed directly onto the surface. Spray the hot water onto the rug at the base of the nap. With your fingers, pull the nap up straight and then use the toothbrush to brush the nap into the proper angles according to the direction of the surrounding nap. Allow this to air dry, and then repeat as many times as necessary to have all indentations repaired.
