Concrete normally has a dull gray color, and brings nothing aesthetically to the interior or exterior of a home. There are ways to spruce up the concrete in your home, and painting the concrete is not only affordable but quite easy to do as well.
You will need:
Step 1: Remove any dirt or grease from the concrete by using an equal amount of hot water and TSP or a quarter cup of dish washing liquid in a bucket. Use a scrub brush to thoroughly scrub away any old stains, dirt or greasy areas, as this can all cause paint to flake off the concrete surface. You can use a mop for large areas, or a scrub brush for small areas or very dirty areas. Allow this to dry at least one hour before continuing.
Step 2: Prime the concrete area by opening your primer. Stir the primer thoroughly so that the color and oils do not separate. It is best to use an oil based primer for any concrete area that will be walked on, but not for any concrete area that will be subjected to heat such as a fireplace or mantle area. Place your roller down into the primer and roll out the entire area, stopping about 2 inches away from corners or floors. Use the paint brush to dip into the primer and paint the 2 inch strip close to ceilings, floors and corners so no roller marks are created and no scrapes occur. Allow primer to dry for at least 6 hours to properly seal and prime coat the concrete.
Step 3: Use the brush cleaner to completely remove the primer from your brush and roller. Follow the directions for your specific cleaner. Some will call for time to dry before future use, while others will only ask to be rinsed in warm soapy water to continue.
Step 4: Buy quality paint that will work on concrete. There are many to choose from in a variety of colors. Begin rolling out the entire area with your roller, stopping again about 2 inches from the ceiling, windows, floors or corners. Use the paint brush to go back and do the cut in work around these areas. It is best to do a few light coats than it is to go heavy on 2 coats of paint.
