Window boxes add a beautiful accent to any home exterior and they add dimension to any style of home. Beautiful draping greenery and flowers are uplifting and joyful additions to the home. Here are the steps on how to make window boxes.
Step One: Measure your Window
Measure your windows and add an extra four inches to the width of the window in order to determine the length of the window box.
Step Two: Select your Supplies
Wood (pressure treated will last the longest)
Trim (Select a style such as colonial, contemporary or Victorian)
Flowers (Select colors that match or enhance the color theme of your home’s exterior)
Step Three: Cut the Wood & Pre-drill Holes
Cut the wood in the desired lengths needed. You will need 2 pieces of the same length for the front and back, 2 pieces of the same length for the sides, 1 piece for the bottom and trim in matching lengths for the top and sides. The trim should be cut on angles to fit together firmly. Lastly, pre-drill 2 holes on each end of each of the pieces of wood.
Step Four: Put the Box Together
Glue the box (s) together & then secure them with galvanized screws. Be sure to connect the wood together firmly without any gaps or edges. Glue the trim or molding to the top edge of the box.
Step Five: Sand and Paint the Wood
Sand the wood to remove any rough edges and apply primer and then exterior paint.
Step Five: Add finishing touches
Stenciling will add a beautiful dimension to the box. Attach the box to the house. Fill the box with potting soil and add plants and flowers.
