Mashed potatoes are one of the classic comfort foods enjoyed by people around the world for many years. They make the perfect side dish for a meal of meat or poultry and you almost have to have gravy if you have mashed potatoes! Each recipe yields a large quantity. There is little skill required in preparing mashed potatoes because the process involves only boiling potatoes, adding a few ingredients, and mashing the potatoes with a potato masher or hand mixer. Everyone should know how to make mashed potatoes so they can serve up this traditional side during the holidays or any other day of the week.
You will need:
- 6 medium-sized russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ½ cup warmed milk
- ¼ cup margarine or butter
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- Dash of pepper
Step 1: Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large saucepan. Cover the potatoes with water so they are totally immersed.
Step 2: Cover the saucepan and bring the contents to a boil on the stovetop.
Step 3: Keeping the saucepan covered, cook the contents for 20 to 25 minutes. Frequently check the saucepan to make sure that the water does not boil over. If it begins to, slightly lower the burner temperature.
Step 4: Remove the saucepan from the stove and carefully drain the water into the sink.
Step 5: Add the warmed milk, margarine or butter, salt, and pepper to the potatoes in the saucepan.
Step 6: Mash the potatoes using a potato masher, hand mixer, or knives. Continue mashing until the potatoes have a light, fluffy consistency.
Step 7: Place the mashed potatoes in a bowl and serve them with butter, salt, and pepper.
Step 8: During step 5, additional ingredients such as shredded cheese or bacon may be added to the saucepan, for a twist on the traditional mashed potato side dish.
