It can be fun to try cooking something that is not a traditional American recipe, and see what it is like. This one would be perfect for that. Baked fig is commonly served in the UK as a delicacy, as fresh dates are rare. Served as a light dessert, baked green fig can be served with ice cream or simple cream as a garnish. This recipe will be for 2 people, where 2 fresh figs are needed per person.
You will need:
- 4 green figs
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1 cup of caster sugar
- 1 cup of water
- Casserole dish with lid
- Oven
- coffee mug
- 2 serving dishes
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 10 minutes. Fill the coffee mug halfway with warm water, and had half a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix together well for about 10 seconds with a spoon, then dip one fig into the water and allow it to sit for about one minute.
Step 2: Remove the fig and complete this step for each additional fig, emptying water and replacing the half teaspoon of vanilla extract each time. When all figs are done, hold the figs one by one over the casserole dish and sprinkle sugar over the entire surface. You will want the sugar to be caked upon the entire surface, so it may be required to roll the figs in the bottom of the casserole dish on the remaining sugar.
Step 3: Place each fig upright in the casserole dish so that no two figs are touching. If you cannot get them to stand upright, it may be required that you cut a small space off the bottom with a knife so that the figs will sit upright properly. If this still does not work, you can always bake them in a cupcake pan. Place the lid on the casserole dish and place in the center of the oven on the second shelf for 20 minutes. If using the cupcake pan, cover the tops of figs with aluminum foil.
Step 4: Remove the dish from the oven when all figs appear softened and most sugar on the surface has dissolved into a caramel coloring in the bottom of the dish. Remove the dish and place figs into the serving bowls. Ladle the caramel colored sauce from the bottom of the casserole dish over the figs, and then allow them to cool for 5 minutes before serving. If you choose to serve with ice cream or cream, now is the time to dish these sides out.
