Outdoor water fountains look beautiful when they grace the front or back yards. An urn-style fountain can come in different sizes and various forms like a terracotta pot or stone vase. Once the proper urn is located, it is easy to turn the item into a water fountain.
You will need:
- Urn to hold water
- Plastic basin (must be wider than urn)
- Shovel
- Brick
- Metal screen
- Submersible-variety water pump
- 2-inch diameter rubber fountain plug
- Shears for cutting metal
- Garden rocks or stones
- Drill
- 2-inch drill bit
Step 1: Select the vessel to use as an urn. If a drain hole is not located in the bottom, use the drill and bit to carefully drill a hole into the bottom portion of the vessel.
Step 2: Determine the location in the yard where the fountain will be placed. Dig a hole to contain the plastic basin. The basin creates the underground water reservoir. Place the basin in the ground and put the brick in the center of it to weigh this down in the ground.
Step 3: Place the metal screen on top of this basin. Cut the screen with the shears so it is wider than the basin and overlaps the soil. Use the shears to make a hole in the middle of the screen. The width of the hole should accommodate the power cord and water tube of the water pump.
Step 4: Put the water pump in the basin. Use the screen to cover this basin, threading the pump water tube and power cord through the screen hole.
Step 5: Place the fountain plug into the hole at the bottom of the urn. Run the pump’s water tube through the plug’s hole.
Step 6: Put the urn on the screen. Fill the basin reservoir and urn with water.
Step 7: Run the power cable to a GCFI outlet. Run the cord behind flowers, plants, or trees to hide it. Place garden rocks or stones on the metal screen to hide it.
Step 8: Plug the power cord into the outlet. The water will flow down the urn’s sides, falling into the reservoir created by the basin. Water will be circulated between the basin and the urn by the water pump.
