Step One: Remove the trim. This is the ring that surrounds the door knob. There are two screws holding it in place and they must be removed first. There are a lot of pieces to this project, so try to keep the screws in order. Remember, you will be putting in the new doorknob in the reverse order that the old one was taken out.
Step Two: Remove the two screws under the trim. These are longer than the first two and actually hold the doorknob in place. Keep these screws safe, and separate from the first pair.
Step Three: Pull apart the doorknobs and take them out of the door.
Step Four: Extract the bold by removing the two screws that hold it in place. The bolt is the mechanism that locks the door. This step will not be necessary if it is an interior door that does not have a lock.
Step Five: In the metal strike plate (this is what the bolt goes into) in the door frame is the right color, you can leave it. Otherwise, take this out too.
Step Six: Put the new bolt in and screw it in place. The slanted side of the bolt should face the metal strike plate when the door is opened. The slant makes it possible for the bolt to slide past the plate and lock in place.
Step Seven: Insert the new doorknob and put the trim piece in place on one side of the door. Be certain that the two are aligned correctly and insert the other side of the doorknob and the other trim plate on the other side of the door. These should line up and look even.
Step Eight: Put the screws back in place. Do this gradually, turning each screw a little bit at a time. If you rush this step the new door knob could end up crooked.
