Interior doors are generally hung when you move into a home. However, many homeowners decide to replace doors inside the home for various reasons. There are other homes that have no doors inside, and for this article of instruction, we will assume there is no door in place.
You will need:
Step 1: Trim the door to fit by determining door size first. Subtract ¼ inch from the door’s width and height so the door can open and close properly. Measure the door to see if it should need any trimming. If the amount that has to be trimmed is less than a half inch in size, use the plane to peel off layers; one from the top and one from the bottom until the proper measurements are completed. If the amount is more than a half inch, use the circular saw to trim off height from the bottom and for width take the amount off evenly from the sides.
Step 2: Hold the door to the door opening so that it is centered in the opening. Mark the door at the latch hole for the strike plate, and this will show you about how high to place a doorknob. The average placement for doorknobs is 36 inches or 3 feet from the floor and no more.
Step 3: Drill for the cylinder of the lock if you are placing a cylinder lock on the door and not a mortise lock. Drill out the area that is already marked on the side of the door to complete this task. If there is nothing marked on the door, use a hole saw kit to cut out the holes for the lock in the door edge and the door facing.
Step 4: Position one half of the hinge with inner knuckles in the slot on the door that should already be slightly indented for you in most preformed doors. Use the centering punch to make starting holes for your screws. Screw the hinge’s leaf onto the door and then repeat on the remaining two hinges. The other half of the hinges should be screwed onto the doorjamb in coordinating areas.
Step 5: Hang the door by holding the door in place and lining up all the hinges. Push the door into place and then insert the pins into the hinges from the top. This holds the doors into place permanently.
