The interior doors of the home provide rooms with privacy. Many people do not operate them frequently and therefore are surprised to discover that a door either sticks or has squeaky hinges. It is not difficult to address these issues and get the door operating properly once again. Simple projects like this make anyone feel like an accomplished handyperson.
To fix a squeaky door, you will need:
• Hammer
• Small, flat screwdriver
• Lubricating oil
• Paper towel or rag
Step 1: If the door is squeaking to the point where it becomes annoying, begin addressing it by removing the hinge pins from the door hinges. Use the hammer to tap on the bottom of the hinge pins at the top and bottom of the door. After repeated tapping, the pins should become dislodged from the hinges.
Step 2: Pull each hinge pin from the top of the hinge, removing it.
Step 3: Apply some lubricating oil to the hinge pins. Also, apply some to the hinge knuckles, which is the spot where the two hinge sections meet. This lubrication should stop the squeaking when the door is opened or closed. Use the paper towel or rag to wipe excess oil from this area. This prevents oil from dripping onto the edge of your door when the hinge is reassembled.
Step 4: Reinsert a hinge pin into each door hinge, tapping the top of the pin with the hammer until it is securely lodged on the hinge. Open and close the door a few times to spread the lubricating oil.
To fix a sticking door, you will need:
• Putty knife
• Phillips screwdriver
• Cordless drill
• 3-inch drywall screws
• Sandpaper sheets
• Petroleum jelly
• Door paint or stain
Step 1: Doors sometimes stick because gravity causes them to lean toward the doorknob side of the door. Inserting a drywall screw into the top hinge of a sticking door pulls the door back into position and prevents the top of the door from sticking against the doorjamb.
Step 3: If the door is stuck at another point, apply some petroleum jelly to the area.
Step 4: If Step 3 does not prevent the door from sticking, use sandpaper to lightly sand the area creating the friction. Once the door swings freely, repaint the sanded area with the appropriate color paint or stain.
