Spring is in the air and along with the warmer weather comes all types of insects. These critters somehow find the holes in any window or door screen and fly right in. The porch or the home is soon buzzing with activity and the homeowner is under attack. To prevent this uncomfortable situation, the smart homeowner will do window and door screen repair as soon as a hole is discovered.
You will need:
- Screen repair kit (includes screening material, rubber spline, and spline roller)
- Screwdriver
- Scissors
- Utility knife
Step 1: Prepare a flat work surface. Remove the screen from the window frame and lay it flat on the work surface. Check the corners of the frame and find the end of the rubber spline that holds the screen in place. Remove the spline using the screwdriver to pry up its end. Pull out the spline from the perimeter of the screen. Remove the spline and screen and discard them.
Step 2: Lay the new screen on the frame, making sure all areas inside the frame are covered with screen. Use the scissors to trim the screen around the window opening. Leave about one inch of excess screen on all sides. Re-center the screen on the frame.
Step 3: Beginning at a corner, place the spline into the groove at the top edge of the frame. The spline should be placed on top of the screen. Roll the spline roller along the grove in order to push both the spline and the screen into the grove. Tilting the spline roller to the outside of the frame will make this process easier.
Step 4: Upon arriving at a corner, use the screwdriver tip to push the spline into the corner angle. Do this carefully, to avoid ripping the screen.
Step 5: Work around the remaining sides, laying the spline and then using the spline roller to push the spline and screen into the grove.
Step 6: When the spline has been applied to all sides and the starting point has been reached, use the scissors to cut the spline. Leave about one inch of excess spline and press it in the groove using the screwdriver.
Step 7: Using the utility knife with its edge facing away from the screen, trim the excess screening material that hangs over the frame. Reinsert the screen into the window frame.
