Converting a tub into a walk in shower is a great way to give the bathroom an entirely new look. This project can be part of the overall bathroom redesign and may create an opportunity to expand the bathing area. Seating and multiple shower heads can be added to the shower, creating a relaxing oasis. Building a walk in shower does not require a lot of technical skill but it does take patience and time.
You will need:
- Tile
- Grout
- Mastic or thin-set mortar
- Tile backer board
- 2×4 lumber
- 2×4 sill plate
- 2×4 headers
- Shower head(s)
- Show pan
- Concrete
- Plumbing supplies and tools
Step 1: Remove the existing shower or tub from the area. Clear out all debris and clean the area, including the tile that will remain.
Step 2: Realign the drain by running the show pan to the relevant area in the new shower. This will enable the existing drain to be left in place, saving both money and time.
Step 3: Erect the shower walls, running them from the floor to the ceiling, or just five or six feet up from the floor. The walls are created by spacing 2×4 lumber 16 inches on the center for wall studs, a 2×4 sill plate along the bottom, and 2×4 headers at the top of the wall, doubled up.
Step 4: Sheet the wall with tile backer board that is mold and water resistant.
Step 5: Pour a concrete slab to form the floor of the shower. Let the slab set and cure.
Step 6: Turn off the water supply. Tap the water line and then install the shower head(s). Give the head(s) some testing to make sure they do not have any leaks and they function properly.
Step 7: Repair all ceiling and wall damage created during shower head installation.
Step 8: Lay tile on the ceiling, walls, and floor of the shower area. Use a thin-set mortar or mastic to adhere the tiles. Once the tile has set, grout the spaces between each tile. Wait 30 minutes for the grout set and wipe the area using a damp cloth. Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours.
