How To Add A Pegboard To Your Workshop
Whether your workshop is in the garage, basement, shed, or elsewhere, it should be organized. Unfortunately, many workshops look more like disaster areas than organized storage for tools and equipment. Start overhauling your workshop by installing a pegboard to keep hand tools and small power tools organized. Some home improvement in the workshop makes it easier to find tools for repairs and enhancements.
You will need:
• Pegboard
• Wood screws
• 1×2 boards
• Screwdriver
• Stud finder
• Circular saw, table saw, or jigsaw
• Screwdriver attachment for drill
• Drill
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Level
Step 1: Prior to mounting the pegboard, be aware that the mount must allows some space behind the board surface. Pegs or hooks will be inserted through the holes in the board and hook from behind it.
Step 2: Use the stud finder to identify wall studs behind drywall that will be used to mount the support strips for the pegboard. Mark the wall in these locations, using the pencil. Draw a horizontal line on the wall between these marks, using the level.
Step 3: Using the line as your guide, attach a horizontal strip of 1×2 boards to the wall with the drill with screwdriver attachment and wood screws. Drive each screw into a stud so the area will have enough support. Continue installing wood strips to form a framework backing for the pegboard. Include several vertical strips in the center area. These provide median support, making the anchored pegboard structurally sound.
Step 4: Use the tape measure to determine the desired measurements for the pegboard, based on dimensions of the installed wood frame. Mark these measurements on the board and cut the board with the circular saw, table saw, or jigsaw.
Step 5: Mount the pegboard to the wood frame with the cordless drill outfitted with the screwdriver attachment and the wood screws.
Step 6: Arrange the pegs or hooks in desired configurations on the pegboard. Hang tools and small power equipment from these. After many items are hung on the pegboard, it can be difficult to remember the proper spot for each one when several items are removed for use. To create a guide, use the pencil to draw outlines around tools when they are hanging. This helps you remember where each item belongs.
